Sacramento based children's author, Ramona S. Thomas read the new simplified version of her award-winning children's book, "On a Treasure Hunt for Words" to a class of children, educators, and volunteers at Saint John's Program for Real Change on Monday, June 23. The new version of the book was well-received by young readers during this special summertime author event.
Saint John's Program is designed to help women and children who are unhoused or struggling with the devasting impacts of poverty.

Award-winning California author Ramona Thomas joined a panel of writers Saturday, April 20 at an event hosted by the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE). The event was designed to equip early learning educators with the tools and knowledge needed to promote reading and literacy to young learners of all backgrounds.
During the event, Thomas shared what inspired her to write "On a Treasure Hunt for Words" and her goal in publishing the book. She mentioned that her book was created for children of all cultures as she would like for young learners of various cultures to see characters who look like them featured in a positive light in children's literature.

During a Saturday morning book signing at Grace Children's Academy, author Ramona Thomas was able to catch up with some former students she hadn't seen in years! They shared stories as she signed books and even shed a few tears of joy at seeing her beloved students again!

SACRAMENTO, CA— Monday, July 31, 2023 --Ramona S. Thomas, an author and educator from Oakland, California visited Destiny Garden Primary School in Mombasa, Kenya to share her book with the institution’s students. Thomas read her book, On a Treasure Hunt for Words, to Destiny Garden’s more than 300 students and staff.
Thomas said the students were eager to hear all about the book. She added that when it was time for her to leave, they appeared reluctant to see her go.
After visiting each of the classrooms and noting that they lacked AC, necessary computer equipment, and other educational tools Thomas also spoke with the school’s administration about its needs. Thomas learned that many of the students need financial assistance in obtaining appropriate shoes, backpacks, sports uniforms, and food. The school is also in need of textbooks, printers, copiers, and other tools required to run a school.

A new book that encourages children to make reading fun will be available this month. Ramona S. Thomas, an educator from Oakland, California will release her debut children's book, On a Treasure Hunt for Words in the spring of 2023. The story introduces young readers to a four-year-old girl named Jetta.

When readers meet the curious tyke, she's left her home state of Louisiana to spend the summer with her grandparents in California. She's constantly asking them questions about the meanings of words. This leads Jetta's grandparents to introduce her to a very special book: a dictionary.
Jetta is enthralled by the dictionary. Using it, she spends the rest of her summer vacation on an exciting treasure hunt for words. By the time summer comes to a close and the first day of kindergarten nears, Jetta's learned so many new words she feels more than prepared to start school.
Jetta’s story gives parents and teachers the opportunity to share a fun yet educational book with children.
When asked what prompted her to write the story, Thomas said, “Several factors. For one, I didn’t see enough culturally diverse representation in children’s books. In addition to that, I've noticed that as the world continues to advance technologically, it seems that tangible books are not as present in children's hands.”
On a Treasure Hunt for Words is the first book in a series called 'Jetta's Adventures.'
Thomas hopes each book in the series will provide an opportunity for parents to bond with their children.
“I hope it will encourage parents to sit down and read with their children, and I hope it inspires children to want to acquire a larger vocabulary that leads them to want to go on a journey with Jetta,” Thomas said.
